New dual carriageway will be “added attraction” for Cambourne Business Park

17 Nov 2005

Amenities and accessibility are improving all the time at Cambourne Business Park as the new settlement and the business park itself grow and develop. The most recent good news has been the start on site of the scheme to upgrade the A428 to a dual carriageway for a 4.8 mile stretch from Hardwick to Caxton Common, plus a major junction at Hardwick to relieve congestion and improve safety.

”Accessibility is a huge issue for occupiers, so it is great news that there will soon be uninterrupted dual carriageway access between the Business Park and Cambridge, cutting journey times and making them more reliable. This scheme should also improve the safety record of this stretch of the A428,” explains Simon Hesketh of Development Securities, joint developer with Wrenbridge Land of Cambourne Business Park.

”Of course it is not just the journey to Cambridge that will improve - the A428 links to the A14, M11 and A1 so this is a very welcome improvement to a vital element of the area’s road infrastructure.”

To minimise disruption, the new dual carriageway will be built alongside the old road. Once the new road is complete, the old road will remain open as a local road and will also provide a much improved route for cyclists.
As part of the scheme the Highways Agency has commissioned ecological and archaeological studies and protection measures are also being carried out which will minimise the effects of construction on the natural and cultural heritage. Some trees and vegetation have been cleared where necessary, but new landscaping and planting will take place once construction is complete.

The new route will be sited further away from most residents than the existing A428, with a consequent improvement in air quality and noise levels.
