Cambridge Cambourne 10k race announced

12 Jan 2009

Development Securities, the company behind the development of Cambourne Business Park, has joined a team from Cambridge & Coleridge Athletics Club, the Cambridge running store Advance Performance, England Athletics East and South Cambridgeshire District Council, to organise a 10k race which will take place in Cambourne on Sunday 5th April 2009.

It is hoped this will not only become an important part of the national running calendar but will be a useful vehicle to promote exercise in the community. An event of this scale will certainly raise the profile of Cambourne and all the facilities it has to offer.

The 10k race route passes through wildlife and scenic areas of Cambourne finishing on the Business Park. The race is ideal for new runners who want to run a proper race which goes beyond a fun run. The distance is long enough to be challenging but short enough to be accessible to anyone with the determination to put in a bit of training.

The course is almost entirely off road on proper footpaths which are better for your legs than hard concrete or tarmac. The whole course is traffic free with a finish that must be one of the most inspiring in the country. Experienced athletes should enjoy the accurately measured course, first class marshalling and chip timing. The date is highly suitable for London Marathon entrants who want a sharp run in good conditions as they taper for the marathon.

The race website http://www.cambridgefestivalofrunning.com/index.htm has full details of the course. To further encourage workers at the Business Park to join in a training program aimed at preparing amateur runners for the event has been circulated around all companies on the site.

People working at companies based in Cambourne are able to enter the race as individuals but there is also a ‘Cambourne Business Park Challenge’ where companies based at Cambourne can enter one or more teams of four and the fastest team will win the trophy.

The main event sponsors include Nike, South Cambridgeshire District Council, the running store Advance Performance, Living Sport and Cambourne Business Park. Local community groups and businesses including the Parish Council, Morrison’s and the Cambridge Belfry Hotel, are also supporting the event through providing marshals, staffing the drinks station or through sponsorship as well as taking part.

The race will raise money for the East Anglia Children’s Hospice, which supports families caring for children with life-threatening conditions and complex healthcare needs; the Wildlife Trust which looks after much of the green space in Cambourne and the Cambridge Athletics Trust which provides help to athletics in Cambridge and South Cambridgeshire so that all who wish to take part can have the best facilities and the training and equipment they need.
